Learn From the Psychologist Featured on Shark Week

I’m Dr. Justin D’Arienzo, the board-certified clinical psychologist who created this Twogether in Texas premarital course. On Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, I helped someone work through an intense fear of sharks. Although overcoming a phobia and preparing for marriage are different goals, both involve learning to manage strong emotions, challenge unhelpful assumptions, and respond thoughtfully when situations feel stressful.

I bring that practical approach, along with my experience working with couples, to this course. You and your partner will explore ways to communicate through disagreements, understand each other’s emotional needs, and approach challenges as a team. My goal is to help you leave with more than a certificate with skills you can practice together throughout your marriage.

Discovery Channel’s Shark Week: Overcoming Galeophobia with Dr. D’Arienzo

Dr. D’Arienzo was featured on Discovery Channel’s Shark Week (broadcast July 31, 2026), demonstrating how evidence-based psychological treatment can rapidly eliminate Galeophobia—an extreme, debilitating fear of sharks.

Filmed over three intensive days on location in Marathon Key and Islamorada, Dr. D’Arienzo worked directly with a patient to conquer his phobia using two primary clinical interventions: systematic desensitization and prolonged exposure.

The Clinical Science: Rewiring the Brain’s Fear Response

Specific phobias are highly common, deeply distressing, and frequently untreated. Left unaddressed, avoidance behaviors reinforce fear networks in the brain. However, under structured psychological guidance, prolonged exposure triggers physiological and emotional habituation, effectively rewiring the brain’s threat response.

Throughout the Shark Week feature, Dr. D’Arienzo implemented a comprehensive, cognitive-behavioral protocol:

  • Systematic Desensitization & Prolonged Exposure: Gradually and repeatedly confronting the feared stimulus in real-world settings to extinguish fear loops and dismantle avoidance behaviors.

  • Diaphragmatic Breathing: Rapidly activating the parasympathetic nervous system to down-regulate heart rate and acute autonomic panic.

  • Cognitive Reframing & Positive Self-Talk: Intercepting catastrophic thought loops in real time to re-establish executive cognitive control.

  • Suspending Judgment: Building distress tolerance by allowing uncomfortable emotions to peak and pass without fleeing or engaging in safety behaviors.

  • Psychologist-Led Protocol: Pacing the exposure hierarchy safely to ensure maximum clinical efficacy and lasting extinction of the fear response.

Filming Locations in the Florida Keys

The three-day clinical intervention challenged the patient across progressively immersive environments throughout the Keys:

  • Aquarium Encounters (Marathon Key) – Controlled baseline assessment and initial close-proximity exposure.

  • Theater of the Sea (Islamorada) – Direct, in-water shark encounter and immersive prolonged exposure.

  • Lazy Days Dock (Islamorada) – Environmental integration and post-exposure debriefing.

Transformational Clinical Outcome

After three days of rigorous, dedicated work, the intervention achieved complete clinical success. The patient fully resolved his primary fear, restoring his ability to confidently enjoy beach vacations and coastal trips with his family.

Break Free from Phobias and Anxiety

Specific phobias, panic, and severe anxiety do not have to be permanent. Whether treating Galeophobia, driving fears, agoraphobia, or performance anxiety, targeted cognitive-behavioral interventions offer a proven path to long-term freedom.
