A little goes a long way here. Women get affirmations naturally from lots of relationships, but men do not. Many times, I hear women saying, “I am not going to praise him.” But that is a disservice to the relationship because women tend to have more interpersonally rich relationships and hear compliments from their friends on a daily basis. Men don’t. Women complement one another and men do not (or it doesn’t have the same emotional fervor when guys do it to each other; it’s more like “attaboy”). But even a man who has success or is very professionally confident may be starving for affection and affirmation from his wife despite praise he may hear from others. Unfortunately, sometimes a wife is angry or annoyed and says, “I’m not going to feed into his ego anymore; I’m not going to tell him nice things. That’ll go to his head.” This happens often, so I’ll explain that if she’s unwilling to provide some affirmations, it doesn’t bode well for the relationship. Both people need to be doing nice things for one another and that includes frequent compliments. From a personal perspective, my wife happens to be on spring break with my two daughters. It’s a girls’ trip with the other moms. I know that I have to make sure that our house is clean when she comes home, especially the kitchen and making the beds. That’s a small act of kindness I’ll do for her and it goes a long way. Another example would be leaving love notes for each other, and doing those other small things that you used to do when you were courting. You know what I’m talking about.
