In order for a message to be understood by the other party exactly as intended, it must be communicated to them verbally. You can improve your verbal communication abilities by using the following techniques.

• Check to see if the other person is paying attention to you. Make sure you have someone’s attention before speaking when you have something essential to communicate to them by addressing them by name and making eye contact.

• Maintain order. Have a purpose for your speech, and organize it accordingly. Consider your words before you speak, and present your ideas and information clearly.

• Employ “I” pronouns like “I feel,” “I need,” or “I would like.” “I” statements assist the other person understand your point of view rather than feeling attacked since they put the focus on your feelings, are less accusatory, and provoke less defensiveness.

• Speak clearly so the audience can comprehend. Steer clear of jargon, slang, complicated language, etc. Speak in a way that is acceptable for the other person’s age, sex, and emotional state.

• Be honest. Communicate your emotions openly and politely. Think of the conversation as a chance to introduce yourself to the other person.

• Be precise and impartial. Decide what the current problem is and how it makes you feel. Avoid using sweeping terms like “always,” “ever,” or “never.” Remain on topic; avoid veering off into general personality issues or bringing up earlier difficulties.

• Be upbeat. Consider the positive aspects of the other person. When praising someone, be particular, kind, and out in the open. Ensure that compliments outnumber criticism.

• React, but do not retaliate. Be respectful, composed, and upbeat. Take a little break from the conversation if it is turning angry. Establish a time for the conversation to restart and stick to it.

• Strive to end disputes rather than win them. If you can’t agree right away, take a pause and decide when you’ll try again. Try to come up with a solution, but keep in mind that sometimes you may have to concede defeat.
